As vehicle have been developed over the years, electronic control systems have been fitted to other functions of the vehicle, ABS, gearbox, communications and climate control to name only a few.  Sometimes the ECU is referred to as an electronic control module or ECM. We work only on the engine control unit or module. The more sophisticated the vehicle, the more sophisticated the ECU has to be. In Fords it can be called a Powertrain Control Module or PCM. On our website, when we talk about an ECU we are referring to the Engine Control Unit.
